Unlike in other countries where people have the freedom to choose their physician and pay costs accordingly for healthcare procedures , Americans deal with Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO’s) who dictate how the medical insurance of a patient will be spent in pursuit of a cure. This prepaid system of health consultation has continously been abused by the HMO’s who hold the lives of the policy holders in their hands as the doctors need to seek approval prior to undertaking any type of medical exam. There have been actual documented cases of HMO’s refusing to approve testing because of the policy coverage of patients. A practice which is in direct violation of the Hippocratic Oath.
These HMO’s have decided that they can play God with the lives of the people who entrust them with their hard earned money in the hopes receiving proper medical care in the future. The healthcare system was not helped by the sudden recession of the country either. The cost of health insurance in America is on the rise. Those without jobs lose their coverage because there is no entity on the other end to pay for the company share of the insurance. This is why I believe that the monopoly of the HMO’s must be dismantled and the right to choose the type of healthcare be returned to the people.
I believe that by dismantling the HMO healthcare monopoly, the general population will discover that healthcare does not need to be a financially draining experience.
