Summary
The Honolulu Association of Social Agencies established Helping Hands Hawaii as its Volunteer Placement Bureau. In 1974, the Honolulu Association changed its name to Helping Hands Hawaii, offering support to the homeless and the needy (Our Purpose & History, n.d.). The group is one of Hawaii’s most profitable and effective non-profits. Through strong collaborations with local social service providers and innovative service delivery techniques, Helping Hands Hawaii manages to keep administrative and overhead costs to a minimum, ensuring that financial support is directed toward providing direct facilities to the people and families who might need them the most. The agency’s ongoing success is greatly aided by contributions from private individuals, businesses, and foundations, as well as grants from local, state, and federal governments and the Aloha United Way. The generous annual patrons who fund the mission fuel the intervention’s ability to meet the neighborhood’s rising needs.
Attainment of Learning Objectives
My learning goals, which included demonstrating an understanding of human relationships, group behavior, organization structures of societies, and how these connections affect human issues, were met by choosing Helping Hands Hawaii as my practicum assignment. My second learning goal involved showing how social and policy factors impact human systems. In my last goal, I implemented ideas, hypotheses, and guidelines that supported optimal performance in social, clinical psychology, pedagogical, and medical systems. I aided low-income individuals, provided them with Emergency Assistance Program (EAP) funds, and offered rent and utility assistance. Most of the time, I checked voicemails, returned calls, and wrote denial letters to clients who were not eligible, those who were not residing on Hawaiian property, or on the waiting list. I further helped qualifying clients with their pre- and post-application processes.
Evaluation
Offering assistance to numerous other worthwhile community projects is one of my strengths. I acquired the knowledge necessary to provide Community-Based Care Coordination and Delegate Payee Services through Hawaii’s Substance Abuse Treatment Branch. These programs offered me a complete care continuum and addressed all client needs. They helped me recognize my full potential in a rapidly modernizing society and growing more global. Hence, I can connect individuals, families, and groups with essential human and financial resources, acting as a vital lifeline for the community by enabling the inhabitants of Hawaii to help one another. Financial difficulties and difficulty making wise decisions are two sectors I need to improve since working for a non-profit organization or a private company makes it difficult to stretch the budget. A lack of funding also hampers governments and individual family services since several human services workers make little money to support themselves.
Future Plans
In terms of practicum, education, or career, my future ambitions involve improving social interaction and nurturing a solid desire to assist people in going beyond their imagined social limitations to enable them to achieve new heights in their lives. I look forward to encouraging independence and acting with morality, sincerity, and objectivity. Those who work in human services must discuss problems with their clients to develop solutions. Hence, I will ensure I have the necessary listening and communication skills. Being part of a team requires me to do social work with ethics. Social workers can be open about their limitations as a result. They can ask for assistance from colleagues who can enhance the effectiveness of interventions because of their honesty.
