Everything on the planet and around civilization is constructed, depends or is influenced by the earth. This necessitated earth science which is the study of the constituents of earth (geology). This comprises structure, substance, formation, movement and change. Geology has greatly helped in disaster awareness, mitigation, enacting of warning systems and location of natural resources. This is discussed in this paper, which eventually shows that geology facilitates civilization and makes the world better.
The importance of geology is shown in the location of natural resources that comprise minerals, petroleum and natural gas. Geologists study ores to show presence of minerals, quantity and viability for mining. They study locations with hydrocarbons particularly petroleum and gas. They study sedimentary basins known to have these reservoirs. These minerals when found and extracted are valuable to economies.
The importance of geology is witnessed in the detection and control of natural hazards. Geologists pass codes for building and put in place warning measures preventing loss of life in places known to have disasters. Geologists estimate places and possibilities of future earthquakes. These places after identification, measures are put in place designing structures withstanding effects of earthquakes and evacuation measures.
Geology is important in engineering where principals of geology are applied. This is done to help assure geological factors do not affect building; construction, design and maintenance. These analyses determine mechanical principles of places where the structures are built. This allows tall buildings and bridges to be built with strong foundations.
Therefore as shown in this paper, it is evident geology is important in the existence of mankind. Geology not only helps in averting disasters, saving life and property, but also helps in discovering resources that help economic growth. Consequently, governing bodies should embrace geology to mitigate hazards making the world a better place.
