Introduction
Communication’s value is not consistently recognized by various employees, who may consider other aspects of work, such as hard work or knowledge, as the main priorities. While effort and expertise are critical, communication cannot be underestimated. According to Wienclaw (2021), communication between the company’s employees is the basis of its success. However, supporting effective communication is a challenge for organizations and requires effort from each employee.
Personal Experience of Communication Problems
In my experience, several situations helped me realize the importance of communication and discussion. In particular, the most influential experience was when I was a team member working on a large project. As participants, we divided the tasks among ourselves and sometimes met for discussions. During the meetings, we discussed progress in completing tasks and clarified some points. One of the participants consistently reported that she copes well with her part of the work. However, when her results were needed, it was revealed that she had a few problems that could critically affect the entire project.
The employee was afraid to report the issues and ask for help from colleagues, as she did not want to seem unprofessional or face condemnation. According to Wienclaw (2021), this behavior is referred to as filtering – the act of hiding certain information during communication. Cardon (2021) also reports that fear of bad news and uncomfortable information is a significant obstacle to workplace communication. However, discussion of bad events and problems is an essential component of progress and helps to overcome them.
Conclusion
Therefore, it is essential to understand the communication features in the workplace and be aware of potential barriers and challenges that may arise. Knowledge of various aspects of communication, including difficulties and improvement techniques, will help employees adapt to the unique features of the work environment and maintain the effectiveness of interactions. The example presented is just one of many situations that individuals may encounter at work, but it demonstrates the importance of effective communication and the impact of barriers.
