Introduction: The Case

In the given case, one of the most notorious issues of the modern world of employment and business management are considered.

Choosing between two employees to promote one of them for a superior position has always been the most complicated task, especially if the opponents possess relatively equal skills and each has his/her own advantages.

However, in the given case, the choice has to be made between a man and a woman, which adds a certain tint of gender discrimination to the situation. In addition, the employees possess different advantages, which complicates the matter extremely.

Giving Weight to the Lead Characters

It is essential to mark that the experience that Kate possesses is rather important and serves as a solid proof to the fact that Kate is an integral part of the company. Knowing all ins and outs of the hospital and understanding the mechanics of the hospital operations, she proves rather important person.

However, it is worth adding that experience is something that comes with time, which means that even newcomers are able to stand the comparison with Kate’s competence in a matter of several months.

Hence, the importance of Kate’s experience is not to be underestimated. However, taking into account that the sphere of operation is hospital, it would be unreasonable to risk people’s lives, which adds a point in Kate’s favor.

However, it is also necessary to emphasize that Roy’s superior training means a lot for the hospital and its patients as well.

With his specific knowledge and skills, Roy can not only integrate into the hospital’s work quickly and efficiently, but also offer new solutions for the most essential problems, which means that Roy can prove a worthy candidate for the promotion as well. Therefore, it seems that the actions of the records manager are fully adequate and completely sensible.

Speaking of the new Employment Equity, I would like to say that women’s rights protection is of utter importance, yet it is necessary not to turn equity into privileges for women.

The Implications for the Equity Program and the Employees Taking Job-Related Courses

It is necessary to keep in mind that if Roy gets the promotion, that is not supposed to mean that women are discriminated in the hospital.

Considering the problem from the professional point of view, one has to realize that in the given case, the health of the patients is the priority. Hence, the choice is to be made in the favor of the person who can provide the best care for patients.

However, if Kate is promoted to a superior position, the people attending qualification courses should not think that the courses worth nothing. What one has to realize in the given case is that Kate’s experience proves to be more important for the patients’ health and stability.

In Charge of the Human Resource Manager: The Decisions to Make

If I were the Human Resource Manager, I would think first of whether it is Kate’s experience or Roy’s professional skills that matter for the hospital and the patients.

However, at present it seems that Roy’s qualification is more important, which means that he is supposed to get the promotion. While experience is something that comes inevitably, obtaining the necessary skills demands considerable effort, which makes Roy a more valuable employee.

Conclusion: Important Ideas to Draw

There is no doubt that the promotion of gender equality is one of the most important issues on the agenda of the modern business world (Gottfried & Reese, 2004).

However, it is also important to keep in mind that the rights of men should not be infringed either. In conclusion, it is necessary to say that in the sphere of business, both men and women are supposed to have equal chances and be treated without any prejudice.
