Teachers’ Bias and the Need for Inclusive Education
What remains the central focus of the film Like Stars on Earth: Every Child Is Different is the teachers’ disinterest in improving Ishaan’s studies. They believe that his poor grades result from his laziness, but they undermine the signs of his cries for help (Khan, 2007). This bias of an easily distracted and lazy child who gets low grades justifies an exclusive education system, as teachers do not even consider the idea that Ishaan might be different from others. However, his distinct features should not have distanced him from education but should have been acknowledged and nurtured by his teachers. Such an inadequate approach to a child whose behavior does not fit into norms proves the urgent need to incorporate inclusivity in education.
Rigid Teaching Methods and the Importance of Individualized Learning
Moreover, all teachers in the film except for Mr. Nikumbh do not recognize children’s needs. Since Ishaan is only eight, he might be engaged more in creativity and self-expression, even in learning (Khan, 2007). In return, he and his classmates only receive strict memorization and adherence to rigid academic standards. If Ishaan did not have dyslexia, he would also need some flexibility and an individualized plan in learning like other children, as they have differing needs, strengths, and weaknesses. However, all these inclinations are not supported by traditional teaching methods.
Holistic Development and the Transformative Role of Supportive Educators
Another alarming observation from this movie is teachers’ narrow focus on academic success. Schools as educational institutions should not prioritize only students’ grades but should also enhance their holistic and emotional development. While educators constantly highlight Ishaan’s inability to read and calculate, which makes schooling even more complicated, Mr. Nikumbh initiates a significant transformation in the child’s life. He acknowledges Ishaan’s learning disability and incorporates unusual techniques that help him to grow academically (Khan, 2007). Only after ensuring the child feels emotional safety does Mr. Nikumbh focus on Ishaan’s learning engagement.
