Few films explore women’s friendship and delve into the interpersonal connection of women, seeking to avoid the restrictions of gender, class, time, and place. The film Thelma and Louise by Riddley Scott depict female nature from the inside. Thelma, who married at 18 and tolerated her tyrant husband, is not as downtrodden and tame as many would like to see her – she wants to escape this routine and start living. In the beginning, Louise says, “You get what you agree to,” but Thelma does not agree to put up, so she packs her things, tosses her suitcases in her friend’s car, leaves a note to her husband, and goes off with Louise for the weekend. “Something has happened in me, and I can’t return,” she says, having tasted the freedom. If Thelma is an amateurish adventurer, then Louise is a severe rebel. Her boyfriend Jimmy does not have any control over her, but instead, she dictates the rules to him, although she is forced to endure his constant adventures in who knows where while she works as a waitress. She does not hesitate to shoot a man who is trying to rape her friend.

Stereotypical films about the female character’s nature are forgotten and never become a symbol of the female spirit, as Thelma and Louise became. The film illustrates the so-called “gun in the handbag” genre. This happened because the work reflects a woman’s actual need for freedom. The events that occur to the heroines and their actions confirm this thesis. Both of the friends do not want to adjust to the rules other people set for them. To achieve freedom, they fight till the very end and do not let circumstances influence their decisions.
