Introduction

Every young person, including myself, dreams of living their life to the fullest until the day they pass away from old age. However, not many of us ever reflect on what it means and the experiences of being old. The reality of growing old is probably not emphasized much because life is a journey with exciting experiences, growth, and transformations along the way. As people age, they encounter challenges and opportunities that have a tremendous effect on their growth trajectory.

To gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of aging, I conducted an interview with Mr. Smith, a 68-year-old individual. This interview primarily focused on his life experiences, the significant milestones he had achieved, the lessons he had learned, and the changes he had undergone. My hope in conducting this interview was to gain insights that I could apply to my life.

Early Life Experiences and Advice for Youth

As I sat down to conduct the interview, I was eager to learn about his life experiences, given my limited knowledge of the same, since I am in college. Consequently, when I asked him about his experience when he was my age, his eyes lit up with excitement as he narrated that it was a time of exploration and discovery. He told me about the many things he had tried and the poor decisions he had made that later shaped his life.

In particular, he emphasized taking advantage of the opportunities that present themselves and embracing new experiences. He told me stories of his time in college and how the effort he put into learning and networking shaped his life. His advice to me was to cherish my college years and make the most of them by being brave enough to step out of my comfort zone.

Milestones, Life Lessons, and Personal Growth

Moving on with the interview, I asked Mr. Smith about the significant milestones he had achieved in his life. He revealed to me that his major milestone was getting married and having children of his own who depended on him. He was very particular in describing the joys and challenges of maintaining a loving relationship while also caring for several children.

However, according to Mr. Smith, all that initial struggle dissipates when the children grow up, and you are there to witness their achievements, such as graduation and marriage. He told me that the achievements of his children bring him immense pride and a sense of fulfillment. The second milestone that he highlighted was the achievements and gains he made in his career. He was excited to explain that his experiences and network from his college years were instrumental in his personal and professional growth.

As I pressed him to reveal more about his signature milestone that stood out above the rest, he explained to me that his most profound milestone was the realization that happiness and fulfillment come from within and not through external achievements. In particular, Mr. Smith emphasized that while he was proud of his personal and professional achievements, it was inner growth, self-awareness, and the ability to love himself that had had a truly lasting impact on his life. This answer left me curious to know more about him and will have an impression on my life as I journey through life and engage in personal and professional activities. Specifically, I will focus on finding satisfaction from within rather than through external achievements.

Upon asking him about the greatest lesson that he had learned in life, his voice became solemn as he reflected on the challenges and setbacks he had to overcome to get where he was. In particular, he was candid about his struggles early in his career and personal difficulties, which were exacerbated by the lack of enough financial resources. However, he was able to overcome his struggle through resilience and perseverance. He emphasized that I should adopt these traits when faced with problems because they helped him bounce back stronger.

His advice to embrace resilience as a life skill had a profound impact on me. Specifically, Mr. Smith made me realize that the failures and setbacks I have faced and will continue to face only make me stronger and will be my stepping stone to growth and self-improvement. The challenges he faced in his personal life are a perfect example of the popular phrase, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

When I asked Mr. Smith about the most significant change he had experienced as he grew older, he was candid and explained the physical and mental transformations he had undergone. He told me that aging can be particularly challenging as one’s health starts to deteriorate and one also loses loved ones over the years. He spoke passionately about the emotional toll of losing close family members, relatives, and friends, which affected him deeply.

His vulnerability and honesty in answering this question put aging into perspective for me, and I realized that it is also part of life. In addition, I also learned that while aging comes with difficulties, it also offers opportunities for growth as one copes with loss and change. However, he was also grateful for the wisdom and self-awareness that he had gained over the years. In particular, aging taught him to embrace change and focus on the big picture.

I also asked him what he wished he knew at my age, which led to a surreal moment of reflection. He explained to me that he wished he were more compassionate and also let go of his obsession with being a perfectionist. He recalled moments where he was unfairly critical of himself and how it negatively affected his self-perception. He advised me to accept all my imperfections and work towards self-acceptance, rather than seeking happiness from the outside.

I then asked Mr. Smith about the greatest challenge of becoming older, to which he answered that he was concerned about the inevitability of mortality. He was very gloomy, explaining that the passing of friends and relatives had made him reflect on the meaning of life. Consequently, his understanding that death was inevitable made him appreciate every moment.

Continuing with my interview, I asked Mr. Smith several other questions related to what he considered the greatest thing about getting older and his favorite age. One of the greatest things about growing older, he acknowledged, was the freedom it brings. He explained that he no longer needed to conform to societal expectations, having developed greater self-awareness and self-acceptance, which allowed him to express himself more freely. Regarding his ideal age, he answered that he was comfortable with his current age. To rationalize this answer, he explained that he had experienced everything up to that age and was excited to see what the future would hold for him.

Reflections and Insights on Aging

Reflecting on this interview, I gained invaluable insight into the dos and don’ts of getting older. In particular, I was struck by Mr. Smith’s resilience and positive mentality that found good in every situation. His emphasis is on being authentic, embracing change, and being self-compassionate. The interview was a personal reminder to appreciate the current moment, pursue personal growth, and value all relationships.

Through this interview, I gained an appreciation for the wisdom that comes with age and how life experiences transform an individual throughout the years. His stories also provided me with insights that reinforced the significance of self-acceptance and the pursuit of meaningful connections. His unique perspective on life and old age allowed me to reflect on the essence of aging and imparted to me wisdom that will be consequential as I grow older.

As a relatively young person, I now understand the importance of living a virtuous life, especially one in which empathy is at the heart of everything I do. As I listened to my interviewees, I realized that their support during old age was tied to actions they took in their youthful years due to empathy. Thus, in the future, I will strive to contribute positively to the well-being of older people, thereby fostering an inclusive and compassionate environment. The conversation about aging is rarely discussed in schools or the mass media (Mosberg Iversen & Wilinska, 2019). Consequently, this interview was a masterclass on how to age gracefully and leave a lasting impression on future generations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my interview with Mr. Smith provided me with valuable insights into his experiences over the years. He was gracious and advised me throughout the interview to focus on self-awareness and self-acceptance as my internal sources of satisfaction. He also emphasized that I be authentic and adopt resilience in the face of difficulties.

Through his narration of his biggest milestone, I learned to embrace all the challenges and opportunities that will come with old age. This interview also served as a personal reminder that, while I pray for a long life, I must be gracious enough to accept that I will encounter difficulties along the way. However, despite the setbacks, I will always triumph if I embody the lessons I learned in that interview.
