Taking of calculated risks
In chapter seven of his book, Abrashoff talks about the importance of taking risks in any organization. He recognizes the importance of risk-takers in any organization and emphasizes that an organization’s strength and life depends on the organization’s risk-takers. In this case, the author suggests that risk-takers deserve promotion and encouragement regardless of whether they fail or succeed in their endeavors. However, the author also addresses the fact that risk-taking poses a threat to a person’s career, especially in the Navy. Nonetheless, risk-taking is fundamental in any organization. Without taking a risk, it is not possible for an organization to try new ways of transacting business and therefore there will be no possibility for innovation.
The author under chapter seven emphasizes on the importance of placing reliance on the independent-minded people. Abrashoff talks about the need to have people who are ready to take the initiative. People who rely on taking orders do not provide much for the organization except for the taking of the orders.
In chapter seven, the author recognized the need for breaking rules that do not make any sense. In this case, he addressed the importance of risk-taking notwithstanding the need to follow the rules.
Going beyond the standard procedure
In the eighth chapter of his book, Abrashoff addresses the need to handle old tasks using new methods and approaches. The author acknowledges that innovation and progress come about when an organization goes beyond the laid down procedures of handling tasks. In this case, an organization should envisage what is to come by thinking imaginatively as well as realistically.
In chapter eight, the author explains the need to keep the focus on the priorities. In focusing on the priorities, the organization will be in a better position when it comes to dealing with unforeseen challenges as it is already prepared for challenging scenarios.
Another point made by the author in chapter eight is in relation to being ahead of all competitors. Despite the fact that this will need extensive planning, it is advantageous in terms of keeping ahead of one’s competitors.
The author in chapter eight also provides for the importance of not ignoring the obvious solutions. The non-complicated solutions that are apparent most of the time get the job done. The author also talks about working smart rather than working hard.
Building up the people
Chapter nine of Abrashoff’s book talks about the need for the leader to instill confidence and strength in his followers. This not only improves the morale and the output of the followers, but it also builds up the leader at a personal level. The author acknowledges that it is part of the leader’s duty to ensure that followers and the employees enjoy their jobs and associate a sense of pride with their jobs.
In chapter nine, the author recognizes the impact trust has on any organization. In any organization, trust is the ingredient needed for progressive change. The author also acknowledges that in building one’s team, the new members need hospitable treatment. This instills self-confidence in the newbie as well as enthusiasm in his workmanship. According to Abrashoff, a leader should counsel his followers continuously with honest intentions. This will improve the spirit of the team.
