The Articles of Confederation provided no instruments of domestic security and minimal centralized power to the legislature. The Founding Fathers realized that a more concentrated organization with the ability to pay and raise domestic security was needed, albeit without the ultimate authority, and decided to write the Constitution. The process challenges include debates on how the enslaved people’s voices would be represented. Their second major challenge was keeping the same degree of control across the administration while pleasing the states. The founders agreed by allocating one delegate per every 30,000 members of the House of Representatives and two senators from each state (Annenberg Classroom, 2018). They decided that enslaved people should be counted as three-fifths of a citizen.
Furthermore, James Madison’s work contributed significantly to the Constitution’s ratification. There were numerous main issues to debate when the delegates assembled in Philadelphia to amend the Articles of Confederation, including representation, state against federal authority, executive authority, slavery, and trade (Annenberg Classroom, 2018). If I were a delegate, I would propose to reduce the power of the Southern States by designing a more direct democratic representation of the enslaved people, who had no voting power. While working through the video and the questions, I comprehended the massive disagreements and conditions that determined the nature of the Constitution and appreciated its value.
