Introduction
Social services provide a broad scope for action to help people in need. To do this, specialists need to have special skills that can identify problems and improve their resolution using specialized professional methods of influence. In the absence of such opportunities, social workers will not be able to provide assistance fully, and as a result, clients may not achieve well-being. Disclosing workers’ primary responsibilities and qualities can deepen understanding of their work.
The Characteristics of an Effective Helper
Some of the imperative characteristics of a social worker are empathy and good communication skills. Due to these characteristics, they can fully establish communication with clients, which allows them to more comprehensively understand their problems and, accordingly, influence their solution (Healy & Thomas, 2020). Empathy can positively impact the communication process as a person will be able to understand the feelings of the interlocutor and empathize with them.
Consequences of not Possessing the Needed Characteristics
If an employee lacks sufficient empathy, communication skills, or flexibility, clients may be disadvantaged by a lack of deep connection. This aspect is imperative for the formation of trust and subsequent interventions. A discomfort can destroy an individual’s desire to receive help and shake confidence in the social worker’s methods (Healy & Thomas, 2020). Therefore, the lack of necessary qualities may negatively affect the services provided.
Comparison of Human Service Roles: Social Workers vs. Counselors
Social workers and counselors differ in that the former focus on one person and their most important problems, while the latter have a broader scope, including personal, social, educational, and career issues. The value of each profession is significant to individuals and can assist in different contexts (Healy & Thomas, 2020). This is reflected in the fact that without the help of specialists, some people will not be able to take care of themselves fully. My career plan includes working as a counselor and a social worker, which will allow me to gain more experience helping people.
Conclusion
In conclusion, effective social welfare assistants must possess specific qualities to help establish more trusting relationships with clients. Without empathy and communication capabilities, it will be impossible to assist people fully. Developing a career in counseling and social work can provide a meaningful experience that can be used to improve personal skills and knowledge. Thus, great attention should be paid to which parameters should be given attention during training.
