Leadership is a beneficial personal quality. Every person can become a better leader by strengthening personal and social skills. Among them is the ability to take serious decisions, responsibility, emotional intelligence, flexibility, and self-motivation.
A leader is not afraid of the decision-making process. To be a better leader, one should practice making important decisions and be aware of the responsibility. It is possible to develop this skill only by practicing the decision taking in real life.
Another quality the leader should have is responsibility. A leader is a person who is ready to take action and foresees the outcome. To be more responsible, one should be able to predict the result of actions and restrain from undertaking unnecessary risks.
One more skill is emotional intelligence. The ability to understand other people’s feelings is a great advantage for a leader. Emotional intelligence (or awareness) can be developed through a better understanding of the concept (Goleman 2014).
A leader should understand the feelings and motives of others and be flexible in finding a compromise on the way to common goals. Flexibility is a trait of character that can be seen in strong leaders. Flexibility is developed by thinking about people and their needs.
Self-motivation is another necessary quality. The ability to see what needs to be done is a part of self-leadership. It is a crucial skill for emerging leaders to develop their effectiveness (Komives & Wagner 2016).
All people are born with different traits of character. Some have more inclinations to be leaders than others. Having leadership skills is often seen as an advantage. That is why there are so many ways to develop your leadership skills and acquire new ones.
