Introduction
Blessed Maria Schinina was born on January 21, 1844, in the town of Bronte, in Sicily, Italy. Her mother, Rosa Lombardo, and her father, Giuseppe Schinina, had eight children, and she was the fifth. Maria’s parents were Christians, and according to the principles and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church, a child was required to be baptized within the same month after birth (Woodman 16). As a result, Maria was baptized shortly after her birth. Blessed Maria Schinina was an outstanding woman who performed God’s work with love and devoted her life to the reparation, worship, and contemplation of Jesus Christ via her acts of charity.
Maria’s zeal and passion for God were evident from an early age. She had a strong desire to help others and found her teachers to be a source of inspiration. As a result, she aspired to follow in their footsteps. She started attending Holy Child Jesus School when she was six years old, and later she transferred to Daughters of Mary School, which significantly impacted the spiritual sustenance she received.
After completing her elementary education, she continued her studies at Ragusa High School, where she excelled academically. Maria felt that civil activities brought her a sense of bitterness, as God’s voice was calling out to her (Conference of Major Superiors PH (former AMRSP) 4:15). After some time, she became a devout Christian and received Sister Maria Gabriella upon her conversion.
The Early and Later Life
Maria made it her mission to motivate pupils to work long hours and lead moral lives. Her pupils, coworkers, and superiors held her in very high esteem, which led to her being referred to as a gifted educator. Blessed Maria Schinina encountered many difficulties and hardships throughout her life and mission. But she prevailed despite her dogged perseverance and unwavering faith despite the challenges. Blessed Maria’s family opposed her decision to become a nun and join the church’s missionary order.
Blessed Maria remained steadfast in her commitment to her vocation, and due to her loyalty, her family supported her. At the time Mother Maria was growing up, Italy was undergoing a period of significant social and political change. The nation was struggling with social and economic issues, neither of which was geared toward the welfare of women. Additionally, due to these conditions, Mother Maria was unable to assist disadvantaged members of society as effectively as she would have liked.
Blessed Maria was raised when women were considered lower-class members who lacked the power to affect anything. Furthermore, she encountered hostility and resistance from those in positions of authority and power. Internal obstacles, such as periods of low spiritual energy and individuals questioning her mission, were challenges that Mother Maria had to overcome.

She was devoted to her profession. She had an unshakeable faith, which served as a source of motivation for her, and her legacy continues to inspire others.
Contribution and Impact
Blessed Maria made essential contributions to society and the Catholic Church throughout her lifetime. She is the founder of several religious facilities established to serve the underprivileged and marginalized. She spent her entire life praying for and aiding others in need, and a deep devotion to the spiritual life marked her life.
