The speech from Plato’s Symposium creates a unique insight into human nature, revealing the reason for the desire to become socially complete. The initial strength of Mankind is in unity, love, and empathy that is different from attitudes toward interactions, which are appropriate in the contemporary world. The speech claims the initial existence of three sexes that are “man, woman, and the union of the two.” The work compares a male and a female individual to the sun and earth, and their combination is considered the moon. According to the speech, Zeus tried to humble men by splitting them into two, which divided their strength. And at the end of the discussion, Aristophanes proclaimed that if “each one returning to his primeval nature had his original true love, then our race would be happy.” It explains the human desire to become complete through finding the love in a person, who might potentially be an individual’s second half as per speech.
Explaining the philosophy of ubuntu, Archbishop Desmond Tutu reveals the significance of relationships based on the religious story. He states that “none of us can ever be totally self-sufficient,” discussing the creation of Eve from Adam’s rib (Video Mark: 3.38-3.44). It may indicate the existence of the initial intention of a higher power to assist humans in becoming better versions of themselves through making them divided apart and weaker. I believe that it is human nature to endlessly search for the people who can make us complete for a period.
Despite the pandemic, which reduced our opportunities to find new intimate connections and maintain existent ones, we must not separate ourselves from society. It is vital always to stay open to people who enter our lives. Perhaps, it is not about finding true love and the second part of identity, but more about obtaining the absent feelings and motivation in any relationship to become kinder, happier, and more productive. We should consider using the Internet to maintain social bonds regardless of the distance between our beloved ones and us.
