The rapid development of social media and information technologies gave rise to such a phenomenon as selfies. This term is usually used to describe pictures that people present as their self-portraits (Rutledge 5). Overall, it is possible to say that such a practice can definitely transform people’s relations with one another and ultimately the entire world. In particular, selfies can offer people opportunities for self-expression, communication, and display of creativity. However, these practices can significantly alter the attitudes and values of many individuals whose self-esteem will be shaped mostly by the opinions of other people. More importantly, they may become less self-sufficient in the future. This is the main thesis that should be examined more closely.

It is possible to say that selfies enable people to capture the most memorable moments of their lives. Moreover, they can share these moments with people who are dear to them. Apart from that, these photographs can be of great assistance to individuals who need the empathy of others. This is one of the issues identified by teenagers who rely on selfies (Yadegaran 3). Overall, this form of communication can be useful for overcoming depression which is one of the problems that adversely affect the entire society. Finally, selfies can enable people to display their creativity. Thus, one can get better insight into their inner world. These are some of the main positive aspects that can be singled out.

However, the critics of selfies say that they can make people rather narcissistic because they will think mostly about the impression that they produce on others. Moreover, they can be pre-occupied with their physical appearance. Furthermore, they may pay too much attention to the opinions of other people (Rutledge 6).

In particular, they will be focusing mostly on the comments of their peers; however, it will be difficult for them to think independently and reach their own conclusions. Additionally, their self-esteem can be distorted. In many cases, this behavior is widespread among teenagers who are more susceptible to peer pressure. By posting selfies online, they want to seek approval, even if it is the approval of people who are not closely familiar to them. As a result, they can become less self-sufficient. Thus, they may encounter several psychological problems when they reach the stage of adulthood. So, teachers and parents should be aware of these risks.

Admittedly, researchers also note that this popularity of this behavior is likely to decline in the near future. Many individuals may simply get used to these photographs (Rutledge 6). However, in the long term, these practices can make the life of people less private. Moreover, the values of many adolescents can be transformed significantly due to the current popularity of selfies. So, the effects of this ephemeron can be palpable for a long time.

Overall, this discussion shows that selfie is an important cultural trend that can profoundly transform the behavior or many people, especially those ones who are relatively young. In particular, they will acquire greater opportunities for self-expression and communication. Nevertheless, at the same time, many individuals can become less self-sufficient because they will consider primarily the assessments and opinions of other people, especially their peers. These are the main arguments that can be put forward, and this trend should be closely examined by parents and educators.
