This work will summarize the article called Medication errors involving nursing students by Asensi-Vicente, Jimenez-Ruiz, and Vizcaya-Moreno. The purpose of the study is to generalize all available information about medication errors among nursing students. The research used questions about nurses, medication error reports and characteristics, and emotional reactions. It also consists of questions about the role of student supervision, new technologies, and simulation to prevent these cases. The target population of the research is the nursing students that did not receive their licenses yet. The statement called Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses was used as a foundation for the article. Another method that was used is the separation of unnecessary articles, and nineteen out of 113 were left as a result. They applied literature and databases using headings like “nursing students” and “medication error” to find needed information. According to the article, nursing students make mistakes at an average rate of thirty percent (Asensi-Vicente et al., 2018, p. 2). However, it states that errors are often underreported because of different barriers. The most common errors are omission which equals nineteen percent, and the wrong dose, with seventeen percent (Asensi-Vicente et al., 2018, p. 3). Other frequent mistakes nursing students make are clamp system failures and intravenous catheter placement.
The main factors that affect the errors are distractions and the lack of experience. The study supported the significance of student supervision in preventing mistakes. The main limitation consisted of the bounded study of the topic. The works are mostly related to nursing professionals and not the students. Another limitation is not analyzing the methodological quality of the articles because of a small amount of research about this topic. It is crucial for nursing students to learn medication administration skills to provide quality health care. The profound studies “are required to identify the most useful strategies for early detection and prevention of medication errors committed by nursing students” (Asensi-Vicente et al., 2018, p. 4). This study is significant to nursing because students are the future medical workers that need assistance to become experts.
