Introduction

Memory, thoughts, and motivation are some of the core components that determine an individual’s life. These components enable people to execute their duties and daily requirements effectively. Moreover, proper application and utilization of these components facilitate critical thinking, management of emotions, and generation of smart and intelligent ideas. While memory concerns the ability to retain concepts, issues, and information for long periods, thought relates to elements that help individuals transform ideas into productive models through critical thinking. On the other hand, motivation is very instrumental in enabling people to manage emotions and undertake their duties assertively. Within this context, the essay examines the contribution of memory, thinking, language, and intelligence, as well as motivation and emotion, on students’ understanding of oneself.

Contribution of Memory

Memory is very crucial in enabling students or individuals to understand their various selves. In essence, memory helps one to receive, encode, store, and retrieve information when required. Thompson and Madigan (2007) explain that since memory entails receiving, encoding, and retrieving information, individuals can acquire various types of information, which concern their personalities and friends, store them and later retrieve them when required. As a result, the students can easily understand their diversities and their environments efficiently and conveniently. Moreover, using the knowledge acquired from various sources of information, students can interpret the contents of their various environments and apply them to their advantage. Therefore, with a good memory, students can minimize the challenges that usually arise when an individual encounters challenging experiences of life. It is imperative to note that although memory can, at time-lapse, students can learn the importance of engaging in activities that minimize and prevent these lapses.

Another important contribution of memory in understanding oneself concerns, its unique ability to help students and individuals decipher the contents of an environment. Memory is very practical in facilitating the encoding of information that individuals receive from an environment (Fuller, 2010). Memory helps students use their five senses and successfully interpret the concepts into ideas that they can later generate and apply. By aiding retention of information for long periods, memory enables the students to recall different encounters of life. Using this ability to recall previous encounters and experiences of life, a student can apply the solutions and successfully deal with the daily challenges advanced by dynamic and trendy societies. Notably, the ability to deal effectively with the challenges of life instills confidence and self-esteem in the students’ minds. Eventually, it helps them to succeed in various aspects of life, which includes education.

Contribution of Thinking, Language, and Intelligence

Thinking, language, and intelligence are among the components that help students understand themselves. Fundamentally, thinking enables students to generate thoughts, which can help deal with daily requirements of life. By facilitating the generation of thoughts, thinking becomes a very important component that helps the student understand their unique personalities (Lau, 2011). After thinking and generating ideas, the students need a way of expressing them. Language is a useful component that facilitates the expression and communication of these concepts, feelings, opinions, and ideas to others in society. Students can employ the right language and use it to express their opinions, feelings, and suggestions successfully and conveniently. It is important to assert that using thought and language students can easily express their perspectives and receive solutions to their challenges from individuals, who have advanced knowledge and expertise on the raised concerns.

A combination of intelligence, thoughts, and language helps the students understand themselves better. Through intelligence, which encourages creativity and self-awareness, students can effectively solve problems that they encounter and make informed decisions. Intelligence is one of the components that encourage creativity and critical decision making among students. As such, students can easily maneuver and handle challenges advanced by encounters and experiences of life. Patel (2008) asserts that using thought, language, and intelligence, individuals’ understanding of oneself advances because they can use observation and creativity instilled by intelligence to understand the diversities that exist among them. Also, students acquire increased knowledge concerning self as intelligence facilitates increased knowledge of self-awareness. The implication that emanates from a combination of thought, intelligence, and language is an improved understanding of oneself.

Contribution of Motivation and Emotion

Motivation and emotion are very crucial components that enable students to understand their different selves. Through these components, students can understand their colleagues and their personalities, and thus, engage in productive interactions. According to Dweck (2000), while motivation encourages individuals to repeat successful initiatives and endeavors, emotion makes them feel satisfied. It encourages them to strive harder whenever they fail to achieve their set targets. Moreover, since emotion concerns various aspects of life, such as temperament, behavior, mood, and state of mind, individuals can understand themselves better after acquiring advanced knowledge concerning emotion (Evans, 2002). With the knowledge acquired about emotion, the students can easily study their colleagues, classify them using the various personalities, and employ the right methods that facilitate successful interactions. Therefore, conflicts associated with poor relationships and conflicting personalities reduce because the students receive increased knowledge of their personalities and divergent self’s’.

Conclusion

Understanding oneself requires a good application of various components of life. Some of the important components of life, which are useful in understanding oneself, include memory, thought, and motivation. Through the effective application of these components, individuals and students can understand the various personalities and behaviors present in a particular society. As a result, the students increase their understanding concerning oneself and succeed in their various initiatives and aspects of life.
