Introduction
Education has become popular in the modern world, and every person is finishing primary studies to stay a valuable figure in communities. The role of teachers is important, and they should love their work to develop their professional skills and provide students with the needed knowledge. Eggers (2008) states that the educational system meets several problems related to students as every person comes from diverse backgrounds and might not speak English fluently compared to other pupils. Moreover, the speaker explains that he has always been surrounded by people who work in schools, and the key issue that constantly arises in classes is the inability to read and write fast. The cause of this problem might also be connected to disorders that do not allow the student to concentrate on their work. The difficulty faced by the speaker’s friends and relatives motivated him to make changes in the system and unite two communities related to English skills to ensure that teachers do not work extra time.
Discussion
The main idea of the initiative is to invite part-time workers in the writing, editing, and journalistic industries to meet with students at schools, provide them with support in speaking issues, and motivate them by sharing their unique experiences. Dave Eggers is closely related to the journalistic sphere, and he decided to allow freelance workers to attend his office several times a week and meet students who want additional support (2008). The office doors open for pupils, who can visit specialists after their classes. This idea decreases teachers’ stress level, allows students to feel valued, and help parents in raising children. Advocating for children is also easier as every student receives enough attention from adults inside and outside the school.
The speaker mentions 826 Valencia Tutoring Center, which has approximately the same aims of supporting young students. It became extremely popular among children; some people in the streets might see pupils walking down the street with backpacks, not going to school but going to the center. The collaboration with the 826 Valencia Tutoring Center is an important step in developing child support outside school (Eggers, 2008). However, even though there are enough professionals, only one bathroom in the building has become a massive problem. The issue can be easily solved, and the general performance of the center is significant. Talented students can collaborate with adults, suggest their ideas, and receive valuable experience. Moreover, they study self-discipline, which is crucial in adulthood, and understand that they can always ask stupid questions without judgment. The acquired skills in communication allow students, parents, and teachers to build a better community where no bullying appears.
To change the advocacy and make it more efficient and beneficial for students, I would introduce teamwork activities where children of different ages can work together with their adult tutor. Teamworking is becoming more popular these days, and many positions require candidates to collaborate with colleagues. Schools should also pay attention to group work as this method might help tutors decrease the workload and ensure that children receive enough attention from their peers during the class. I would also work on understanding the relationship between children and their parents as adults always stand as role models for the younger generation. If relationships are poor, it is important to advise children or parents to attend psychology therapy sessions or visit educational centers to work on different tasks with professionals in different spheres.
It is important to have specific skills like communication, work ethic, and problem-solving to make significant changes in communities that require academic help. I would bring these three skills to the mezzo advocacy project to ensure that Dave Eggers’s ideas succeed in the future. By communicating, it might become possible to understand people’s preferences and apply needed changes to the system. Children require attention, and teaching them the key aspects of communication may make it possible to avoid misunderstandings. Ethics is also crucial in the project, as people of different backgrounds should not feel discriminated against by skin color or religion. The main idea of the Eggers system is to help students who do not speak English well, and this fact suggests that tutors should be tolerant. The problem-solving skill also plays a significant role as workers in different industries like writing and journalism should be prepared for the extra work with children who require more attention than adults.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Dave Eggers has proposed a working idea that can support an education system around the world and decrease the stress level of teachers, students, and their parents. The mezzo level of advocacy, like schools, should not underestimate the conditions of their pupils, as one teacher cannot provide attention to every student in the class. This problem may cause depression in children and the development of different mental disorders. Consequently, by cooperation with people working in diverse industries that might be beneficial for students’ studies, children might get a chance to socialize and control their emotions by working with adults.
