According to Morabito’s article (2022), the author discusses a survey by The National Center for Education Statistics that shows that American students are not performing well on standardized tests. This issue is problematic because it means that students are falling behind other countries worldwide regarding their school performance, which concerns parents and educators alike (Morabito, 2022). Many parents are frustrated with their children’s schools because they feel like administrators, teachers, and students are all working against them to get kids into colleges and careers that do not require a degree (Morabito, 2022). The article says a recent poll showed that 80% of parents were dissatisfied with their kids’ education (Morabito, 2022). It further stated that only 44% of parents felt confident in their ability to pass their values to future generations (Morabito, 2022). Most parents are upset with the bit of attention given to their children’s education. They feel that the schools do not provide the guidance necessary to succeed in college.
Parents say that they have no voice in the classroom because their children are too young to be able to express themselves. In addition, parents are livid about the lack of funding for schools and the poor quality of teachers (Morabito, 2022). The article states that the parents believe that their children’s education lacks adequate funding and that they have not been given a good enough teacher to help them learn.
Further, other reports have been released recently indicating that many schools across the country are also facing financial difficulties. This problem can link to low enrollment numbers and increased expenses associated with building new facilities or renovating existing ones after years of neglect (Morabito, 2022). The author explains that some schools have been able to make these changes without resorting to cuts in staff or services due to public pressure.
Relationship to the Domestic Policy
In the article “Parents Are Furious About the Sorry State of Education in America,” Morabito (2022) talks about how parents are frustrated with the state of education in America. The parents have been forced to watch their children’s education deteriorate and feel like government officials have no idea what is happening. This frustration is not only felt by parents but also by teachers and students. Morabito further states that many teachers leave their jobs because they are not given enough money to do their jobs properly. Or because they feel like their students are not being taught well enough for them to stay in their positions. The article relates well to Domestic Policy because the book’s authors discuss how the government can help improve education across all levels (Krutz & Waskiewicz, 2019). This book outlines how governments can intervene when problems arise within schools, such as teacher shortages or low funding levels (Krutz & Waskiewicz, 2019). However, they discuss how these interventions will only work if there is political will behind them.
Additionally, American schools have been criticized for not teaching students about global issues or about how to interact with people from other countries. In addition, some schools do not offer courses on mental health or sexual harassment prevention (Krutz & Waskiewicz, 2019). Finally, these same schools do not offer Advanced Placement courses or even Honors classes in most cases. This lack of attention to education is part of a more significant problem with the American government. It has become disconnected from its citizens since it cannot provide meaningful services.
Personal Perspective about the Political Issue
In my opinion, I believe that education is a crucial part of growing up and is essential for one’s future. If people do not have an excellent educational system, it will be hard for them to find jobs and make a living. If one lacks the requisite skills or knowledge, no jobs will be available, and one may become jobless or homeless. This news briefing has helped me understand that children should not be punished for their mistakes but can be allowed to learn from them to avoid repeating them. I believe schools should teach students all subjects like mathematics and science instead of just focusing on reading and writing because these subjects are important too.
