Introduction
The first significant consequence of burning oil is the impact on the climate. As DiCaprio in the movie states, “We have known about the problem for decades, yet we have done nothing to stop it. We have burned more oil, and the planet has warmed” (“Before the Blood” 28:23-28:58). This statement highlights the long-standing issue of climate change caused by burning fossil fuels, such as oil. The increasing temperatures and extreme weather events devastate natural ecosystems.
Discussion
Another negative consequence of burning oil is the pollution it causes, but the issue is human health instead of the effect on marine life. The statement, “the air is thick with smog, and the water is full of toxins,” illustrates the immediate health impacts of oil pollution on individuals (“Before the Blood” 9:48-10:05). Longer exposure to intoxicated air can create an array of health problems, including breathing difficulties and reduced lung capacity.
Finally, burning oil contributes to the depletion of natural resources by depleting the finite amount of fossil fuels available on Earth. The scarcity of resources was acknowledged by President Obama, who referenced the Pentagon’s overview of resource shortage as “a national security issue” (“Before the Blood” 1:14:21-1:14:26). This highlights the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources to secure Earth’s future and preserve the planet for future generations.
Several factors contribute to the emergence of harmful environmental and social consequences. First, many people need to understand the science behind climate change and the impact of burning oil on the planet. Another reason that many people feel powerless against large oil businesses pursuing their interests which causes a lack of effort. Finally, the lack of political will is another explanation of the current situation, as most leaders need to implement meaningful initiatives in this regard.
Conclusion
My attitude towards talking about climate issues is that it is essential to raise awareness and advocate for change. When the opportunity arises, I have conversations about climate change and the importance of sustainability with friends, family, and colleagues. However, I do not engage in these discussions as often as I would like, as I participate in such conversations approximately once per month. The reason is that it can take time to find the right moment and audience for these conversations. Additionally, discussing climate change can be emotionally taxing and lead to feelings of helplessness.
