James Baldwin is a novelist that is famous for his collections of essays. It is imperative to note that the topics that the author raises in his works are truly intriguing, and it necessary to understand their importance. The first chapter of “Nobody Knows My Name” is especially interesting because the piece is incredibly emotional and introspective at the same time.

Baldwin grabs the attention of the reader with one of the lines of the first chapter, and he states that “I left America because I doubted my ability to survive the fury of the color problem here” (17). Differently put, the author admits that he thinks that it was a necessary course of action in a particular situation because he struggled to understand his role in the country. It is paramount to note that the experience that he gains in Europe can be viewed as truly valuable because it changes his perspective on what it means to be a writer, and why this profession is so important.

However, he realizes that each society has its issues, and it is necessary to address them. A mentioning of status is also essential, and social critic believes that it is especially problematic in America because the way people treat writers is different than in other countries.

It is paramount to say that it is not an easy task to forget years of discrimination and mistreatment, and it is likely that it will always stay a critical part of the history. On the other hand, he believes that artistry is praised in Europe much more, and authors do not have to deal with numerous barriers, and can freely express their opinions. He believes that creative freedom can be troublesome in some situations because one has to understand that novelists also have a broad range of responsibilities. The fact that they have a tremendous influence on people is critical.

Baldwin creates a particular connection with readers in the first chapter with such words as “every society is really governed by hidden laws, by unspoken but profound assumptions on the part of the people, and ours is no exception” (23). In other words, the author suggests that it would not be an easy task to change the perspectives and opinions of individuals.

The situation has formed over the years, and it is not likely that it is going to change anytime soon. It is imperative to say that such perspective in particularly interesting, and essayist is not afraid to voice his opinion on such topics. The understanding of his role has changed completely, and he is proud of being an American. He believes that mobility and opportunities that are available are essential, and individuals should be able to realize their potential.

In conclusion, it is necessary to say that there is no doubt that this work is close to being a masterpiece, and it is paramount to understand why it is so influential. The devotion that is shown by the author is truly astounding, and it is evident that he wants to draw attention to topics that are incredibly serious and are in need of discussion.
