When offering an expatriate position to an employee, it is important to consider the additional benefits beyond salary that will be needed in order to make the move to a foreign country easier for the employee and their family.
Non-Financial Benefits to an Expatriate
Housing Assistance
As a human resources manager for an international company, I would offer housing assistance to the employee moving to Brazil. Finding suitable housing in a foreign country can be a challenge, and providing assistance with locating and securing a home can be a great help in making the transition easier (Chams, 2019). Additionally, I would offer assistance with moving expenses, as the cost of international relocation can be quite high. This can include assistance with finding a place to live, furniture, and other items.
Language and Cultural Training
Another important additional benefit to consider when offering a position in a foreign country is language and cultural training. This is especially important in Brazil, as the language and culture are very different from what the employee may be used to. Offering language and cultural training can help the employee and their family better adjust to the new environment and make the transition smoother (Chams, 2019). By offering these additional benefits, beyond salary, to the employee moving to Brazil, I can help make the transition easier and more successful. This will benefit not only the employee but also the company, as the employee will be able to start work more quickly and with less stress.
Cultural Orientation
The company should also assist the employee and their family with cultural orientation to ensure they are aware of the local customs and culture. It may include information about the language, food, and customs of the country. Moreover, the employee and their family must have access to medical care and mental health services so that the family is able to cope with the stresses associated with the transition. Furthermore, access to a support network should also be provided to the employee and their family. For example, a mentor or a club can help with social activities and assist with settling into the new culture. This will help the employee and their family to feel more connected and supported during the transition.
