Summary of the Article and Research
The chosen article by Feredica Dellafiore and colleagues reports the outcomes of a randomized controlled experiment focused on nurse-led self-care (SC) promotion practices. The investigation assessed whether motivational interviewing (MI) sessions conducted by nurses would increase heart failure (HF) survivors’ SC (Dellafiore et al., 2023). The study was conducted in a heart failure clinic and involved delivering MI to random patients.
The research involved MI delivery and four SC assessments within the following year. Having enrolled over 180 participants, Dellafiore et al. (2023) created three participant groups, with two receiving patient or patient and caregiver MI and the last group serving as a control. Nurse-delivered MI positively impacted SC maintenance but not management or confidence in both intervention groups.
Statistics in the Article
The parameter that would be interesting in evaluating MI’s effectiveness is the mean delta of each group’s SC scores. The research question was whether nurse-led MI sessions delivered five times a year could increase HF patients’ SC maintenance, confidence, and management (Dellafiore et al., 2023). Delta scores revealed the size of change in SC between two data collection events.
Concerning the completed test, the researchers resorted to the t-test method. Dellafiore et al. (2023) completed t-tests with two samples to compare SC change between the two MI-receiving groups, the control group, and all MI-receiving subjects for each follow-up data collection session. Cohen’s D scores were instrumental in determining the size of MI’s effect on the participants’ SC.
Reflection
I selected the article due to my interest in MI as a nursing intervention and its applicability to addressing SC deficits, which are a widespread issue. Dellafiore et al.’s (2023) article is applicable to nursing practice because it suggests the benefits of nurses’ engagement in MI training to support patient health. The study’s outcomes imply that teaching nurses to implement this inexpensive intervention can be a promising decision to help healthcare consumers maintain adequate SC.
