Introduction
Bedsores are a major cause of patients’ death and longer hospital stays in U.S. medical facilities. James and Abraham (2020) conducted their study using “the pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test design” to learn whether a structured teaching program is efficient in nursing education (p. 4). The researchers were particularly interested if the expected improvement in nurses’ pressure ulcer prevention knowledge will enhance elderly patients’ outcomes.
Discussion
In this article, some previous studies are mentioned to prove the severity of the concern and the low levels of nurses’ education on the matter. James and Abraham (2020) explain why they find the SSKIN care bundle to be used by caregivers. The sample of their study included forty nurses from a hospital in Thiruvalla. The statistical analysis allowed us to prove the positive effect that a structured teaching program has on caregivers’ application of the SSKIN care bundle.
The study’s hypothesis was that caregivers of elderly patients would become more skillful and prepared after the educational program is used. One may say that the sample size of forty is of interest in this article because other studies mentioned by James and Abraham (2020) included larger samples. Eventually, the researchers used a pre-test to determine the level of knowledge before the study and then a post-test to define the effects a week after the study.
Conclusion
I selected this article because of its great value for the nursing practice. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “pressure sores affect the health of nearly 1 million populations every year in the United States” (as cited in James & Abraham, 2020, p. 4). The problem needs to be solved, and the authors prove the effectiveness of a structured teaching program in educating nurses to use the SSKIN care bundle. This study’s findings can be used to enhance national health rates and introduce changes to the nursing practice, making caregivers more aware of bedsore prevention.
