My organization PMU is the first university in the country to implement the use of the Peer Instruction learning approach. This has been motivated by the school’s undertakings to make necessary changes that can help improve the learning experience for students in my country. With the ongoing call to find and develop student-centered learning approaches, Peer Instruction has provided a remedy for this search.
Students centered active approaches are more effective in learning compared to any other method of learning. This is why the PI learning approach was invented to bridge the gap between teachers and the students. PI as a learning method allows an interactive and active engagement between the two parties. This paper seeks to analyze the invention of the Peer Instruction learning approach to justify its practicality.
The concept invented by Mazur in the late 90s is a brilliant idea to conceptualize student’s ability to understand. In the Peer Instruction learning approach, students are encouraged to work together which is a foundation for learning life skills.
Students need to learn how to work together as a team and solve a problem together because this prepares them for the outside world. Apart from effectively ensuring that a student understands his or her task, they also learn to share and consult. Peer Instruction is an approach based on students working together in groups of two or more to discuss and support their reaction to a particular problem. This allows the students to conduct more informed and comprehensive researches and hence it promotes deeper understanding.
The Peer Instruction learning approach is mostly based on concepts which is a formative way of learning. In today’s competitive academic world, learning institutions must embrace the changing trends and the need to update our approach towards learning.
Concepts provide a way for teachers and students to access timely responses that can facilitate better performance. This approach is more effective in learning compared to any other but most importantly, it has been well received by students. Instructional arrangements that focus on the students are better for learning than those that do not. Students through the PI approach can convert the concepts they learn in text form into useful and understandable illustrations. This is the essence of learning, the ability to transform knowledge into useful information
A Learning approach that can prepare students for the outside world was the main consideration when inventing the peer instruction learning process. The idea was to come up with a wholesome product academically and also socially. It was meant to build and form students who are capable of offering academic and life skills in both the society and the corporate world. Teamwork and reliability are virtues of the essence in people’s lives. Students working together in groups bring this reality closer home. The holistic gain acquired through the use of the Peer Instruction learning approach is in every aspect a brilliant innovation grounded on student’s best interests. This concept not only makes the students learning experience more fulfilling and effective, but it also makes the learning process easier.
This paper has elaborated and analyzed the invention of the peer instruction learning approach and its effectiveness in changing the entire historic learning procedure. Based on the results provided by the use of this approach, the paper seeks to justify the invention as a brilliant idea. The idea of having a student-centered education system is well justified in the paper. It is through this invention that finally a way to teach while engaging the learners has been brought to life.
