The abundance of artworks that have been generated throughout thousands of years of human history makes it challenging to locate one specific piece of art for discussion. However, the one I chose for this assignment is the Colosseum in Rome, Italy (See Figure 1). This architectural artwork is an Amphitheatre that was built in the first century CE. The techniques used by the creators is based on the utilization of multiple rows of arches that allow for enhancing the height and stability of walls without overloading them with heavy materials.
I am fascinated by this building due to several reasons. Firstly, it is the architectural design that is strikingly simple in its principle due to arches use and, at the same time, very complicated because of the size of the structure. The monumental meaning of the artwork is another reason for my appreciation. The number of events in history that took place at the Colosseum and the fact that it is still standing despite the damage adds value to it.
The Colosseum is considered the largest amphitheater in the world; it is 159 meters wide. It had about eighty entrances and was designed to provide seats for over 50,000 viewers at the same time. These impressive numbers validate the importance of the artwork for Rome of the time of artwork’s creation.
