Place-based learning is a student-centered educational approach that enables facilitating community-directed teaching. In particular, such an approach allows for integrating various experience-oriented learning practices that might not be available in the traditional academic setting. When comparing place-based and traditional learning, one might identify several pivotal aspects that show similarities and differences between these two frameworks. Identifying the differences allows for determining the appropriateness of each of the compared approaches for educational goals.
Firstly, while both approaches teach children essential knowledge, traditional learning relies on external influences on children via teachers’ instruction and information delivery using lectures or discussions. On the contrary, place-based learning facilitates internal sources for learning through hands-on experiences based on the cultural background of the students (“Place-based learning,” 2020). Secondly, place-based education focuses on the community in which a student lives, while the traditional learning approach provides generalized knowledge. In such a manner, traditional education is limited in incorporating community into students’ education. For example, when constructing lessons for Hawaiian students, special projects within place-based learning might include the investigation of the geography of the region, its history, culture, social processes, and others (“Place-based learning,” 2020). Thirdly, traditional learning, in general, and lectures, in particular, are primarily based on students’ acquisition of theoretical knowledge, while place-based education emphasizes practical learning.
Overall, while traditional learning allows for achieving generalized results in education, place-based education enhances the connection of students to their communities. The use of hands-on experiences, prioritization of internal learning of students based on their background, and the acquisition of practical skills make place-based learning a flexible and valuable educational tool. Thus, it is particularly relevant to use it in community-focused educational facilities and projects.
