Introduction
Chapter 4 of Laudato Si is an outstanding encyclical written by Pope Francis. This chapter, titled “Internal Ecology,” delves into the concept of the interconnectedness of everyone and everything on the planet. In this work, Pope Francis calls for all people to recognize that the Earth is the common home of all humanity and that it is our responsibility to care for and respect it. The Cry of the Earth and Interconnectedness
One of the most essential things Pope Francis mentions is the lamentable state of the Earth due to environmental degradation. The Earth cries, while the poorest and the most vulnerable, such as the indigenous populations, become most affected by the degradation that the planet is suffering (Pope Francis, 2015, par. 49). As the Bible says: “And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me’” (English Standard Version Bible, 2001, Matthew 25:40). This means that we are all interconnected, which is another postulate of Pope Francis (Reese, 2015).
When the Earth and the poorest suffer, everyone will eventually suffer. Our smallest actions can have a significant impact on the ecosystem and the world, both positive and negative (Understanding Laudato Si, n.d.). We are here to take care of the Earth: “The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it” (English Standard Version Bible, 2001, Genesis 2:15). God intended us to treat our home and our brothers and sisters with love and respect, which is what Pope Francis asks us to do.
Roots of the Crisis and Ecological Conversion
The roots of the ecological crisis lie in the human behavior. Pope Francis points out that it is human consumerism that is causing the ecological degradation of the Earth. In particular, overconsumption is harming the environment on an unprecedented scale (Pope Francis, 2015, par. 101). Overconsumption comes from greed, which is one of the most severe vices. “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs” (English Standard Version Bible, 2001, Timothy 6:10). With greed, gluttony, and overconsumption the humanity is getting drifted away from God and closer to the destruction of the Earth. What Pope Francis is calling for is the “ecological conversion”, that is, a change of heart and lifestyle. People must recognize their responsibility and change for the better.
The Importance of Education and Ecological Spirituality
The key to saving our common home is to educate the current and future generations. Education is vital when it comes to fostering ecological awareness and responsibility. Teaching children about the importance of saving the planet from an early age will help to create a generation of responsible adults (Pope Francis, 2015, par. 213). “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it” (English Standard Version Bible, 2001, Proverbs 22:6). Our faith should also inspire us to care for God’s creation, the Earth. All people should develop ecological spirituality to see the divine in all creation.
Conclusion
Pope Francis calls humanity for integral ecology and emphasizes the interconnectedness of everything God created. It is people’s moral and spiritual duty to take care of everyone’s typical home and to care for the most vulnerable who are affected by the degradation of the planet. There is an urgent need for ecological conversion, education, and ecological spirituality so that future generations grow up realizing their responsibility.
