Analysis
Porter’s Five Forces analysis focuses on competition, the power of suppliers and customers, and the threats of substitutes and new entrants. First, the competition in the technology industry, including portable and wearable devices, is intense. Many rivals, such as Samsung, Google, Dell, and Sony, offer products in the same areas Apple targets.
Although consumers may be a weak force individually, their collective decisions, driven by trends and word of mouth, can significantly impact a company’s success, making them a powerful force. Suppliers’ power over the business is limited, and this force is weak, as Apple has a selection of potential partners who can supply the same materials and technologies. The threat of substitution is low, as smartphones, laptops, and similar devices are incomparable to other devices in terms of versatility. Finally, the threat of new entrants into the market is low, as new companies may emerge. Still, Apple’s established status and premium product offerings position it in a high-end customer niche.
Apple pursues innovation in all spheres, but its leadership model remains stable. Since 1998, Apple has employed a functional organizational management model, with each department corresponding to a specific task (Podolny & Hansen, 2020). The company’s middle and top managers typically rise from within the company or the industry – they understand the products and possess technical knowledge. Therefore, one can argue that their style combines elements of transformational, democratic, and charismatic leadership. Apple’s successes and brand recognition demonstrate that these leadership approaches are practical.
Recommendations
However, if Apple wants to expand its reach to customers and introduce new products in the mid-range segment, the company may consider adopting a model of purposeful leadership. While this approach is similar to the styles mentioned above, it pursues a clear goal and focuses on a collaborative, targeted, and innovative approach to solving a problem (Joly, 2022). By implementing this product development approach, Apple can focus on new offerings and deliver results quickly without compromising quality.
Apple must consider new actions to align its operational needs with new business strategies. First, the corporation must establish a team of professionals to research price reduction strategies, ensuring they align with Apple’s typical offerings. This investigation is the starting point for designing a new range of devices. Second, the company should contact new or existing suppliers and compile a list of new materials suitable for manufacturing.
