Poverty Measurements
Poverty is a serious issue that can substantially halt societal progress, making it essential to study and measure. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (2023) website, the most common methods include policy analysis, surveys, and data gathering. The primary observed factors include average income, equal opportunities, social mobility, and living standards.
As Rank (2023) notes, these techniques are not universal, as definitions of poverty vary across settings, calling for a relative approach. As a result, the general study process involves analyzing the quality of life of an average citizen and comparing it with that of other social classes. The measurements also consider the policies that may affect economic inequality in the researched country. Thus, this complex approach allows scientists to draw systematic and cross-sectional conclusions.
The Gini Index
The Gini index is a coefficient used to describe the distribution of wealth within a population. It is presented as a value between 0 and 1; the higher the value, the less economically equal the country is (Rank, 2023). While it is a useful method for analyzing the state of disparity, it has limitations that may lead to misrepresentation (Hayes, 2024).
These issues include the two-dimensional approach, which increases the number of scenarios that yield the same results, and the inability to account for informal economic activity. Consequently, the Gini index should not be the only element of the analysis and must be complemented by the evaluation of the data used to calculate it. Therefore, using a single number to summarize the state of economic equality is impossible, and the issue should be considered using several approaches.
Poverty Portrayed in Angela’s Ashes
The topic of poverty is vividly described in McCourt’s (1999) book “Angela’s Ashes.” The main character addresses several issues associated with low income and inequality. For example, Malachy, the father of the family, is presented as an ex-criminal who suffers from alcoholism. When he met Angela, he “came from three months he had spent in jail” (McCourt, 1999, p.15). This fact also affects his habits and personality, as later the author mentions domestic violence and neglect, which indirectly lead to the death of the main character’s siblings.
However, poverty is also a factor, as the family does not have the resources to afford proper medical help. All these elements contribute to the circumstances that limit the main character’s potential. Thus, the main aspects of poverty that must be addressed are access to healthcare, crime prevention, and targeted support for vulnerable individuals.
Reflection on the Interactive Task Results
To personalize the discussion of inequality, I used the “What’s your share of the pie?” web tool (The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2023). The results did not surprise me, as I accurately estimated my family’s income and identified the most relevant issues to address to reduce poverty. Moreover, the majority’s opinion on taxation policies was understandable, as people agreed that high-income households must contribute more than low-income ones.
However, one surprising fact was that 42% of respondents were satisfied with the current government’s actions to reduce poverty (The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2023). I believe the implemented methods are not effective enough to reduce the issue’s impact. Still, my choices of aspects that should receive more support matched the majority’s, including health, education, and poverty reduction. In conclusion, using the web tool confirmed that the issue of poverty is complex and must be addressed with a range of approaches tailored to country-specific factors.
