Summary
Dissemination strategies that I would use to share evidence-based practice in an intensive care unit (ICU) workplace setting are print materials, namely posters and team meetings. According to Hasanica et al. (2020), “health-educational posters are recommended in situations where it is necessary to reach a wide audience for a long period of time” (p. 135). The ICU requires a fast yet comprehensive response from nurses and physicians. Such posters have been found to be able to disseminate and amplify knowledge and awareness in medical professionals (Hasanica et al., 2020). Discussion and educational team meetings enhance communication between the healthcare workers of the unit and relatives and family members of patients regarding the diagnosis and prognosis (October et al., 2020). This communication is sometimes life-saving, and it is the reason for the inclusion of this dissemination method.
Excluded Dissemination Strategies
The methods of dissemination that I would not use are leaflets and electronic communication. Researchers have found that the former cannot increase specialized knowledge in knowledgeable and aware receivers (Hasanica et al., 2020). The latter were excluded from preferred ways of knowledge distribution because “it can create additional interruptions that decrease clinicians’ presence” in their current workplace (VanDusen, 2017, p. 1). Moreover, some practical aspects of the necessary interactions with patients cannot be transferred through software and words.
Barriers and Means of Their Overcoming
Each chosen dissemination strategy has some barriers of diverse degrees of difficulty to overcome. For educational health posters, these are staff concerns about the quality of the evidence shown; it is the complexity of the presented research in the case of discussion and educational team meetings (Ashcraft et al., 2020). The most efficient means of overcoming this include data presented in commonly used formats and accessible and transparent language during the description and explanation of the research, evidence, or activity.
