Description of Product Design Evaluation

A detailed product design evaluation scheme is required to better understand how to achieve the desired outcomes while minimizing the potential cost of the project (see Figure 1). Product designers must carry out three essential phases before conducting the final product evaluation.

Phases of Product Design Evaluation

Analysis

During the first phase, the team has to analyze the existing problem. Several crucial steps have to be taken to finalize this phase properly. The key components of the problem should be identified, and each module of the product design should be examined separately to avoid any misunderstandings in terms of the functions and the purpose of the final product design. The third step is to compare each module to the desired standards.

First Evaluation

The next phase relates to how the team will evaluate the proposed product design. Hence, each module has to be compared to the desired result, and vital improvements are deployed if desired outcomes cannot be met with the aid of the current design. Then, the overall performance of the proposed design is evaluated, and the team prepares for the third phase.

Decision

The decision phase is the most important for the product design team because it is when it becomes clear whether the team has to maintain the current course, alter the project (via specific modules), or reconsider the entire project.

Final Evaluation

Ultimately, the final product evaluation has to be carried out to have the team pick at least four of the variables from Figure 1 and see how they affect product design outcomes. From functionality and aesthetics to ergonomics and design quality, multiple indicators must be outlined to inform the existing product design. Finally, proper product testing has to be carried out to evaluate consumer reactions and preferences while gathering feedback from the team. Product design decisions can be made in the future based on these additional insights (for instance, opinions, suggestions, and observed behaviors).
