Abstract

The Nursing philosophy is viewed in the light of four commonly accepted aspects: the person, environment, health, and nursing. The philosophy of nursing assumes nursing as a scientific discipline aimed at promoting the health of individuals. This paper aims at bringing out the concepts of and individual, health environment, health and illness, and nursing in relation to the practice of nursing. It will also bring out the interrelatedness of the concepts in the nursing profession.

Introduction

Nursing Philosophy defines ‘ Nursing’ as the manner in which a health problem is diagnosed and treated in an individual. It is an art and science dedicated to improving the physical and psychological well-being of individuals. Nursing is also a profession that is dedicated to helping individuals, families, and the community so that they attain maximum health.

Nursing as a profession influences a person’s health to a greater extent in that; the goal of nursing is achieving the highest level of health in an individual. Being able to maintain maximum health since having maximum health is considered a right to all people. Bloomington hospital believes that through nursing, nurses should be able to curb the causes of illness and ensure comfort and healing to patients as well as promoting health. If all doesn’t’ work ensuring a dignified death of the patient.

Nursing as a scientific discipline aims at providing maximum functional health to an individual, family, and the community. The clients of nursing include the individual, family, and community. Nurses aim at creating the worth of the whole lifespan starting from a child, to the great individual, then to the family, and finally to the whole community. Nurses should provide care to all in an effective and efficient way aimed towards a positive outcome.

Quality care is improved by assuring individuals, families, and the community of good health whether they are healthy or ill. Nursing care is required when it is noted that an individual whether well or sick needs attention towards his health, in order to ensure the recovery of the individual or a peaceful and dignified death.

Nursing aims at making sure an individual functions normally without any other complications and with abundant strength. Nursing plays a very important role in the community, while working closely with other health care professionals it aims at promoting health to the members of the society. An individual comprises a physical body, social aspect, psychological aspect as well as emotional and spiritual being. All these parts are interrelated to one another, the individual relates with the people around him and is also an influential factor of the environment.

Nursing defines health as a process of stating the wellness and illness of a person. Health is determined by social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental conditions of where the society lives.

The wellness of an individual is referred to the state of well-being in a person. When a person’s state of being is well, the person is able to make a living. Illness is referred to as the imbalance state of wellness. When a person is not well, that person is ill.

In nursing when a person is stated as being healthy, the individual could be ill or well. Health is a period in time when an individual is exercising maximum wellness. Health is composed of a number of factors one of which is the existence of a person with the absence or presence of a disease. For example, nurses take care of the elderly in society, these old people could be healthy physically but they are ill because they have got disease-related cases, for example, they could be having diabetes.

Even though health is the state of wellness or illness in a person, it is not possible for a person to be chronically ill and healthy at the same time. This is because the chronic nature of a disease leads to death.

The Environment deals with the physical, psychological, cultural, economic, and political aspects that influence an individual’s, family’s, or community’s health. Individuals, families, and the community are interrelated and they make up the environment. According to primary health care, the environment is a primary determinant factor of health.

Nurses are required to provide a safe patient environment, the nurse shouldn’t be influenced by external or internal issues surrounding his patient. The External issues that a nurse should keep away from being influenced by are a patient’s race, religion, culture, or financial level. The internal issues include the patient’s disease or withholding any important information to the patient’s health. A nurse should give proper patient care to the patient.

A nurse is required to collaborate with other staff in the health fraternity, in order to make positive changes in the life of individuals. The nurse should be involved in interactive times with other medical practitioners to gain more skills in promoting the health of an individual. The professional nurse will not only be responsible for his/her clients but also for the other nurses. She should be able to take responsibility for the other nurses and supervise their roles, as well as ensuring the good promotion of health.

In nursing, for a nurse to gain more professionalism, the nurse should be involved in research findings and increasing his/her education, so as to be able to promote health efficiently. In addition, he nurse should be actively involved in the political, social, and economic aspects that are related to her medical profession

Conclusion

In conclusion, the philosophy of nursing is based upon a set of codes that regulate the nursing profession, however, dealing with individuals and the community, in general, is an interesting way of life.
