Dahlgaard et al. (2013) developed an informative article about the worth of Business Excellence Models (BEM) in quality management, the problems modern managers may face in their work, and the solutions that can be developed with the help of BEMs. There are several important lessons that can be taken from the chosen article, including the creation of different models in quality management and the introduction of the approaches that may support and guide people. Much attention was paid to the limitations of business excellence models, and this information helped to identify the strengths and weaknesses of modern organizations on the example of the Boeing AS case.
One of the main limitations is the poor performance demonstrated by companies. The authors tried to explain such limitations and used the impact of a National Quality Award for that (Dahlgaard et al. 2013). It was learned that it was hard or even impossible to guarantee success, even if being aware of financial or non-financial benefits. Another limitation was connected with the existing weaknesses of self-assessment and unstable award applications.
One of the strongest aspects of this article was the possibility to find out the explanation and argumentation for each fact. Dahlgaard et al. (2013) taught their reader about the importance of an organizational claim and the recognition of non-prescriptive frameworks. It was learned that companies had to spend enough time and effort to choose their own methods for assessing their opportunities. Companies and their leaders should also understand the essence of each model in order to make the right choice. Teamwork is one of the best solutions to be used in total quality management.
Finally, people should never neglect the role of the quality of people’s integration in the working process. Any excellence model has to be practical and become a solution to the existing problems. For example, the limitations of companies may be solved with the help of the 4P excellence model that includes people, partnerships, processes, and products.
In general, the article written by Dahlgaard et al. (2013) helps to understand that many limitations and challenges can be solved in case an appropriate excellence model is offered and properly implemented. Sometimes, it is necessary to spend more time or to investigate the field. Still, the solution can be found, and excellence models are developed to introduce the solutions in a short period of time, promote success, and established a desirable organizational culture.
