Strengths and Weaknesses of Rational Choice Theory vs. Systems Theory
A strength associated with using rational choice theory is the assistance in observing individual and group habits. In this case, it is easy to determine whether personal or group problems negatively affect the client. Similarly, a strength of systems theory is that it provides a comprehensive approach that seeks to evaluate all structures in the client’s environment. It requires a holistic view of the client to understand the biological, social, or emotional problems affecting them.
Another advantage of rational choice theory is that it plays a role in explaining behaviors that are considered irrational (Van Hiep & Tram, 2020). Systems theory has the drawback of treating any amount of influence as having complete control over the system, in contrast to rational choice theory (Read et al., 2019). The theory must recognize that some problems are likely more influential than others.
Strategic Approaches to Traditional and Non-Traditional Hispanic Families
Systems theory provides a strategic approach to dealing with traditional and non-traditional Hispanic families by focusing on complex systems. The theory seeks to understand how the various components of a system come together to form a complex system. In this case, the complex system is traditional and non-traditional Hispanic families. Using theory can help identify the problems affecting them and possible interventions. Systems theory looks at a problem from several angles, which helps address and evaluate it strategically.
Interventions Derived from Rational Choice Theory and Systems Theory
One type of intervention based on systems theory is the structural approach, which seeks to understand family interaction patterns. Then there is the approach that seeks to identify problematic issues and develop solutions that allow family members to act differently. A strategic approach can also be initiated in systems theory to address problematic everyday interactions. This approach seeks to develop a culturally relevant solution that addresses the family’s perceptions of the system. These interventions address family dynamics by focusing on the family’s daily life, actions, and relationships.
Choosing the Best Evidence-Based Theory for Hispanic Families
Systems theory would offer a better evidence-based approach when evaluating the needs of traditional and non-traditional Hispanic families. Hispanic people believe that family is an integral part of their day-to-day life and thus rely on support from each other in various instances. Utilizing systems theory when working with a Hispanic client can help ensure they receive the support needed to enhance their well-being. It can also help enhance an understanding of family and communal issues that might negatively affect an individual.
