Event Focus and Genre Overview
Reading and Conversation is the event title, which took place on March 2, 2023, and was hosted by Deborah Landau, Terrance Hayes, Claudia Rankine, and Ocean Vuong. The main focus of this event was on poetry, where each author represented their views in contemporary literature. The event was performed online, on the YouTube platform, so that a wider audience could observe it.
The event host introduced each of the writers (NYU Creative Writing). During this performance, the writing background of each character was presented. In addition, the features of each writer were emphasized to increase viewers’ interest.
Framing the Reading: The Role of the Introduction
The presenter structured the work in the introduction in such a way as to provide listeners with an understanding of what works will be read. Information was given about the authors, their latest written works, and their general merits. For a writer’s reading, introductions that could introduce the topic about which the story will take place, as well as basic information about the writer, may be best suited. This way, listeners will understand the key points and meaning of the readings.
Main Presenters and Their Distinctive Contributions
Terrance Hayes is renowned for his significant poetry collection, exploring the themes of race, human experience, and identity. Claudia Rankine is known for her critically described novel, which outlines social injustice and microaggression. Ocean Vuong is famous for using deep motives and lyrics in his books. He mainly focuses on such topics as family, immigrant experience, and resilience. All presented writers have shown a feeling of empathy in their works.
Key Lines, Quotes, and Significant Ideas
The emotional intensity can be marked through live observing. One of the critical lines in the work can be called: “If everything is coming into being except possibility, then why say presence or presence departing?” (NYU Creative Writing 31:35-31:42). The meaning of this line explains the importance of the presented work and the need for reading it to convey to readers the philosophical questions of existence.
Personal Reflections and Expectations
The event attracted me to the personalities of the authors who themselves declared the works. The readings exceeded my expectations, as it was fascinating to hear the poets, and they encouraged me to analyze the complexities of the presented issues. This transformation has had a positive impact on my ability to analyze and listen to many essential attributes of literature, such as first impressions.
