Richard Nixon did not have countrywide support because of the losses in two previous elections. The Republican Party members hoped for a candidate who would be electable. Nixon superior planning and organization helped in defeating the opponents. The candidate ran on a manifesto of restoring law and order to all the cities within the country. The 1960s saw more riots in different cities as people protested various grievances, such as civil rights and anti-war protests. Nixon also promised the public that new leadership would be provided by the administration in the Vietnam war. The candidate also assured the public that the government would be streamlined to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. Thus, riots within the cities, protests against the Vietnam war, and assassinations within the country assisted Richard Nixon to win in the 1968 elections.
