Two of the most well-known people in American history are former President Theodore Roosevelt and President William Howard Taft. From 1909 until 1913, Taft served as the 27th President of the United States. Roosevelt is regarded as one of the finest American presidents of all time. He was the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909.
Both men are renowned for their enormous contributions to American politics and crucial roles in determining the country’s course. A historic fracture within the Republican Party occurred in 1912 due to the disagreement between President Taft and ex-President Theodore Roosevelt, which was essentially a result of their opposing beliefs and future national visions.
Emergence of Conflict Within the Republican Party
The competition between these two iconic presidents started when Roosevelt decided to run against Taft for the Republican nomination in 1909 while seeking reelection. Roosevelt backed progressive reforms and a more active role for the federal government in the country’s affairs, while Taft preferred more conservative policies and a larger emphasis on state governance (Oxford 44).

Roosevelt’s Progressive Party had a spirited reelection campaign, but Taft prevailed in 1912 (Oxford 45). Since the two men’s historic separation caused the Republican Party to remain divided for years afterward, the party suffered.
