Creativity and innovation by Second City’s president, Tom Yorton
Creativity is the ability of workers to use their critical thinking skills to come up with different solutions at work. Employees who use their creativity are able to generate new ideas, some of which are used to improve the quality of work performed. Innovation is the ability of workers to turn creative ideas generated into concepts and products, which influence the market positively. Workers who are innovative implement different ideas to come up with strong product concepts that raise the profile of a firm in the market.
The role of failure play in the creative process
Failure helps organizations learn from their mistakes which gives them an opportunity to improve their creative processes. Entrepreneurs should take failure positively because it helps them build their confidence, patience, and resilience. Failure motivates entrepreneurs to use new approaches that are more effective than the previous ones. This allows entrepreneurs to search for valuable information to help them understand how to improve operations in their firms.
A rule of improvisation is never to say “No.” The correct response is “Yes, and….” What impact does each of these responses have on creativity in an organization?
The rule of improvisation makes a manager in an organization respect what his employees have generated without turning them down. This makes it possible for new decisions to be made quickly which improves performance. Employees are free to think and come up with several ideas, some of which can be refined and used to carry out necessary improvements in organizational processes.
Tom Yorton: “My job as leader of this group is to give them the resources to create new stuff and to give them the opportunities to develop creative new offerings and new services”
Small businesses need to realize the importance of learning new ideas because they contribute positively to a firm’s growth. This makes an entrepreneur take time to understand the industry he is operating in and the behavior of potential customers, his firm targets. Small businesses need to develop effective systems that encourage creativity and innovation to improve their performance in the market.
