Research question: How is the psychological imbalance treated as a crucial factor in the prosecution of sex offenders in Canada?
Calvert, J. D., & Bauer, T. (2019). Juveniles with sexual behavior problems: A treatment program evaluation. Open Psychology, 12(1), 1–11.
The authors’ thesis is that sexual behavior problems in juveniles are caused by mental illnesses and require treatment. The authors note that behavioral therapy is most effective when working with people who commit sexual crimes (Calvert & Bauer, 2019). The central claim of this article is that psychological therapies, especially cognitive behavioral therapy, can change the distorted cognitions of sexual juveniles. Key points made by authors to support that claim consist in providing statistics on a noticeable reduction in the risk of recidivism of sexual crimes in juveniles. After undergoing cognitive behavioral therapy, criminals who previously belonged to the high-risk category moved to the low-risk category.
I intend to use the source as proof that when prosecuting sex offenders, it is necessary to take into account that juveniles have psychological imbalances. To support this statement, I chose this particular article due to the fact that it contains the conclusions of forensic psychiatrists with extensive practice. The conclusions and evidence in the source relate to my own conclusions. They confirm my conclusion that psychological imbalance should be treated as a crucial factor in the prosecution of sex offenders.
Gallo, A. (2020). Treatment for non-contact sexual offenders: What we know and what we need. The Journal of Treatment & Prevention, 27(3), 149–163.
The author’s thesis is that when considering crimes, it is necessary to take into account the identity of the sex offender. This is because some sexual crimes are related to the sexual deviations of the criminals, the so-called sexual perversions (Gallo, 2020). Key points made by the author to support that claim are that a significant portion of sexual crimes are committed by persons with mental abnormalities. Sexual perversions that motivate criminal behavior are usually not isolated disorders of the sexual sphere. They are, as a rule, only part of the syndrome of the pathology of drives in various types of mental pathology, such as endogenous mental diseases, organic brain lesions, or psychopathies.
The value of the source to the essay I plan to write is to consider a large number of applicants. I intend to select cases from the judicial practice of Canada since I consider this region in my paper. The conclusions and evidence in the source relate to my own conclusions as they contain the conclusions of criminologists and medical and forensic psychologists, indicating that intrapersonal factors determine the commission of illegal sexual acts in Canada.
Littell, J. H., Pigott, T. D., Nilsen, K. H., Green, S. J., & Montgomery, O. L. (2021). Multisystemic therapy for social, emotional, and behavioral problems in youth age 10 to 17: An updated systematic review and meta‐analysis. Campbell Systematic Reviews, 17(1), 1–19.
The author’s central claim is the need for a comprehensive study of sexual crimes and the identity of a sex offender with mental abnormalities. It should combine forensic psychiatric and clinical psychological approaches that take into account social, emotional, and behavioral personality traits (Littell et al., 2021). Key points made by the author to support that claim are statistical results of studying the clinical and social characteristics of persons accused of sexual crimes, the frequency of their commission, the prevalence of sexual pathology, and its forms in various nosological groups.
The authors cite the results of a clinical and psychological study of the motivation of these sexual crimes, proving the presence of a psychological imbalance in juvenile sexual offenders. I intend to use the source to provide statistics and specific numerical indicators since this study has a fairly wide sample, which makes it possible to consider it credible. The conclusions and evidence in the source relate to my own conclusions due to the fact that the data of this article contain data proving the prevalence of sexual violations among persons accused of sexual crimes.
