In the evening I went walking all alone
Light was fading, dusk was falling all around
Pipers pounded tiny legs in the foam
Waves edge seeking ghost shrimp deep in the ground
Lightning flashed a distant storm out at sea
Outlining clouds blocking the stars and moon
Flickered on whitened wavecrests rolling in toward me
For a moment only and darkness loomed
And yet the night was not so still or barren
The birds, the shrimp, a dance of life and death
The clouds, the waves, another of larger ken
The constant sound as clear as mother’s breath
And turning round to find a higher place
I see in the darkness the love of my darling’s face
This sonnet follows the Shakespearean tradition in that its rhyme scheme follows the ababcdcdefefgg pattern with introduction of change in the ninth line. I believe all lines follow the traditional iambic pentameter meter structure for this type of poem.
