Introduction
The rise of Shakespeare from a provincial commoner without a college degree to a worldly, prolific, and eloquent writer in history remains a topic of debate across the globe. Most of his writings remain relatable and reflect human conditions in the modern era. Specifically, Shakespeare promoted humanism, introduced numerous words used in contemporary society, and contributed significantly to the modern film industry.
Reason Why Shakespeare Matters
In his works, Shakespeare significantly contributed and enhanced the expression of humanism, which remains prevalent even in the modern world. Specifically, William Shakespeare upheld human dignity and emotions during the Elizabethan Age in plays like Hamlet and Julius Caesar. He significantly understood worldly injustices and inequities to understand their effects on human character and relationships, which made him promote the concept of humanism (Cohen 11). Today, the modern world upholds the ability and responsibility of human beings to live an ethical life that supports attaining a common good.
Additionally, Shakespeare introduced new words and phrases in the English language that remain useful to date. In the modern world, terms like “love is blind,” “fall in love,” and “breaking the ice” have become clinches and feature primarily in Shakespeare’s fictional works (Tatipang 63). His contribution to the English language is evident since many conventional speakers depend on these words for daily communication.
The modern film industry relies on Shakespeare’s plays to produce quality cinema genres. For instance, films like Deliver Us from Eva, although it effectively addresses the contemporary social issues of the 21st century, draw from the themes of The Taming of the Shrew (Cohen 22). Hence, the film industry relies on some of the genres established by Shakespeare to produce quality films.
Conclusion
Shakespeare’s works still matter since their influence on humanism, language, and the film industry is still evident. Indeed, most of the present artistic and fictional works serve as an improved version of Shakespear’s writings. Thus, his name will remain significant since he presented situations, language, and people the world recognizes today.
