Smart homes are a requested technology in the modern world, which explains the presence of many articles on the topic. Thus, the article “Smart Home Observing and Control Security System: A Case Study” by Santhi et al. (2018) is among them, and the researchers investigate how an Internet of Things (IoT) system can help monitor electrical energy consumption. The paper review reveals that the article needs major revision to be accepted.
To begin with, one should highlight that the article overviews how an IoT-based system can save electricity bills by reducing electricity consumption. PIR Sensor, GAS Sensor, and ATMEL Microcontroller are included in the system that contributes to the given results. Furthermore, the power supply, microcontroller, and sensor units are installed, and they allow for monitoring data of electrical gadgets and controlling them. It is impossible to mention that the study has any flaws regarding its technical part. In particular, the article was designed to demonstrate how an IoT-based system can help save electricity in a smart home. The authors effectively explain how this system can be created and what benefits it can bring, which is significant merit of the study. However, some inefficiencies refer to how this information is presented. In addition to “Methods,” the article is also missing the “Discussion” section that should interpret what the findings mean and how they can be used.
Furthermore, it is reasonable to comment on what literature was cited in the paper and how one can assess the research novelty. On the one hand, the works cited represent a significant advantage of the study because it relies on reliable evidence that comes from professional and scholarly articles. A significant part of the references is timely because they are two-three years younger than the article by Santhi et al. (2018). On the other hand, it is necessary to comment on the paper’s novelty. One cannot state that the research under analysis is unique because many other studies focus on how to optimize smart home technologies. The popularity of the topic in the research field explains and justifies the high number of studies considering the technology. The focus on timely literature also brings additional value to the work.
In conclusion, the given paper has just overviewed the selected article. Santhi et al. (2018) have focused on how a sophisticated system can improve smart home management. The analysis of the study has revealed that it has both advantages and disadvantages. On the other hand, the article offers a detailed explanation of a technical part and relies on timely and credible literature. On the other hand, the title of the “Method” section is absent, while the author also failed to include the “Discussion” section at all. This information demonstrates that the study is incomplete because the researchers do not explain what their findings mean and how they can be used. Consequently, the given paper needs major revision to be accepted.
