Contextualization
Political power and sociolinguistics are closely intertwined because how people express their thoughts and positions directly shapes their political positions. Language is a tool of persuasion, communication, and control, making it a valuable resource in political activity. The sociolinguistic aspects of many well-known politicians are closely tied to their manner of speech and political stance. For example, one can analyze how aspects of Donald Trump’s manner of speech reflect political power.
For this study, a sample video was selected featuring an interview with an expert in language models who analyzes Donald Trump’s speech. The former president’s manner of speech is the subject of numerous analyses due to its unconventional, informal nature in the political sphere. To a certain extent, linguists label Trump’s speech style as immature and not reflective of social maturity (MSNBC, 2017). Correlating Trump’s speech models with his political role is not correct and complex enough. Language, in the context of Trump’s use of it, is a tool of manipulation and control.
Problem Statement
The problem statement for the topic under study is to identify how Donald Trump’s manner of speech reflects the sociolinguistic aspects of power. The research question is whether Donald Trump’s speech reflects his social and political position. Thus, the objective of the paper is to analyze the speech patterns and non-verbal cues that the politician used to clarify their impact on Trump’s position in power.
Additionally, it is crucial to examine the impact of the politician’s sociolinguistic style on society. The objective of this work is to analyze the sociolinguistic features of a person and their influence on power, using Donald Trump as an example. Regarding current social life, the objective is to understand how language patterns can influence the dynamics of social relations and social power (MSNBC, 2017). Regarding professional development as a teacher, the objective should reveal a deeper understanding of the profession in the context of rethinking the role of language in shaping social interactions.
Theoretical Framework
The theoretical basis for this study is sociolinguistics, which explores the relationships among language, culture, and society. Language is not a default tool of communication, as it is influenced by social arrangements and cultural norms that help shape feelings (Nasution et al., 2019). The way a person speaks reflects their cultural values, social status, and identity. It is also an essential factor that helps people form relationships with others in ways that benefit them. In the context of political power, the use of language models is conditioned by the influence they exert on others, such as manipulation, persuasion, and control.
Sociolinguistics is the field of study that examines the relationship between a person’s language and how their speaking behavior shapes interaction with society and culture. Thus, language is not a neutral means of communication but is shaped by social and cultural factors (Muhamadjonovna, 2020). The way people speak reflects their social and cultural identity and is closely tied to their values and beliefs. Sociolinguistic theory suggests that the way one speaks is also a tool for conveying social status to interlocutors and strongly influences the formation of relationships.
In the theoretical framework under consideration, a key concept is linguistic variability, which refers to the ways speech is used within social groups that exhibit significant differences in language use. Thus, language variation can take many forms, including dialects, adverbs, accents, and registers, which may differ across social groups (Nasution et al., 2019). Various factors, including geographical location and social class, shape social factors. The study of linguistic variation is essential because it helps examine how social identity shapes the formation of power.
