Introduction
Both crossover and Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) have a rugged design and high ground clearance, which prevents them from getting stuck in the mud and off-road. There is no single answer to the question of which car is better. An SUV has excellent off-road capabilities thanks to its body-on-frame construction and a solid wheelbase borrowed from a truck. Crossovers are a combination of an SUV and a hatchback. The final choice of a car depends on the purpose of its use.
Similarities
Crossovers and SUVs have much in common, starting with size and design. Both cars are comfortable and have good roominess. The first and second types of vehicles will easily overcome snowdrifts or dirt on the roads.
Differences
Despite the external similarity, the crossover and SUV have significant differences: body structure and chassis, fuel consumption, and cost.
Structure
In their body structure, SUVs have a frame that crossovers do not. This construction is borrowed from trucks and provides off-road stability. In addition, SUVs have all-wheel drive and low gears. Crossovers usually have front-wheel drive, which creates problems when driving on severe off-road terrain. Differences in design lead to differences in the ability to overcome obstacles on the road. A SUV can go almost anywhere, while a crossover is designed to drive on paved roads in urban areas.
Fuel Consumption
The cars’ construction explains another difference – fuel consumption. Crossovers have excellent fuel efficiency because they are lightweight (Ou et al. 18). SUVs consume a lot of fuel due to their design features.
Price
The last thing that distinguishes the two types of cars is the price. SUVs can cost twice as much as crossovers.
Conclusion
Both SUVs and crossovers are roomy, passable, and ruggedly designed. However, the SUV’s body construction and chassis make it more suitable for off-road and rough areas. In contrast, the crossover is designed for urban environments. Unlike SUVs, crossovers use less fuel and are low-priced. Thus, the final choice will depend on the customer’s goals. An off-road vehicle is suitable for a countryside resident or a lover of outdoor activities; a crossover is ideal for city trips.
