Ethical Issues of Data Governance and Stewardship

Data governance also referred to as data management, is a term for the creation of cross-functional teams and establishing laws and boundaries in providing data services to various stakeholders (“SLDS issue brief,” 2017). Data stewardship, on the other hand, is a process of handling the information that does not belong to the steward (“SLDS issue brief,” 2017). The ethical issues of both lie in the fact that third-party individuals are handling and setting the operational rules for what is considered private data (Briney, 2015).

The potential for causing harm to the owners of said data is colossal. Informed consent of data handling is the typical solution for these kinds of issues (U.S Department of Education, n.d.). However, a different ethical problem arises from the fact that the majority of data owners are not qualified enough to make an informed decision about giving access to personal data for third-party operators.

Data Governance and Stewardship in Relation to Strategic Planning

Strategic planning is an area of management that involves setting mid-term and long-term goals for the company as well as outlining the basic principles and strategies for achieving them (Briney 2015). Strategic planning is interconnected with data governance and stewardship, as no long-term projections can be made without information. There are various parameters involved, such as the current and projected production values, fluctuations of the market, turnover rates, material costs, interests on loans and deposits, and other factors.

Data governance sets up the ground framework for data collection in the scope of a business or an organization. Data stewardship, on the other hand, establishes the processes of data handling by the decision-makers as well as the security of said data against outside forces (“SLDS issue brief,” 2017).
