For a student, schooling may pose various challenges at any time. As learners commence their studies, they have different types of study skills. As a result, they draw motivation from various sources, and view their studies differently. Irrespective of one’s background, they have to put many things into consideration as they embark on their studies. Students need to constantly develop their reading skills to counter the pressure that comes with exam literature as well as pending projects. The paper identifies three strategies to develop reading skills among students of the high school class.
A student ought to develop reading skills that suit the type of text in question (Hemphill et al., 2019). For example, reading scientific texts differs from reading for pleasure. In this case, while reading scientific texts, student can take extra time to familiarize myself with the terminology and jargon therein (Kikas et al. 2018). Using this method, students can thoroughly understand the scientific text in question along with the arguments discussed. I seek to make sense of difficult terminology by seeking answers through active information search. Students’ reading experiences, in this case, can be strengthened through the provision of materials in which difficult terminology and jargon are comprehensively explained, saving study time spent looking for this information elsewhere.
Students ought to incorporate helpful fun activities into their studies as a way to improve their attitude towards academics in general. In this case, I developed an affinity for poetry as a way to create my utopia and to deal with emotional and psychological changes. While randomly scribbling things on my notebook, I realized that poetry was a powerful tool for therapy. As an avid reader, coupled with a knack for experimenting with words, I found interest in rhyming words (Amin, 2019). Creatively putting down my thoughts and feelings on my notebook would become a rich source of tranquility for me. This serves as a moment to take my mind to the challenges that come with normal study thus improving my attitude towards school. Schools may empower students by facilitating these helpful extracurricular activities through various clubs, as their existence is synonymous with an improved attitude towards school, and thus, improved academic performance.
