Introduction

The purpose of Zachary’s article “A dying California tells us much about America’s future” is to bring to the attention of the reader the woes affecting the state of California; their most probable causes; and how this is a reflection of an ailing U.S economy. By analyzing the problems facing America’s largest state, the author intends to provide a clear picture about the future that the American nation is heading into. According to the author, California is drastically diminishing from being the guiding principle for American achievement and optimism and instead has become a bearer of the bad news regarding the United States’ current domestic problems.

The investments made by talented and enterprising world citizens are crumbling down to the detriment of these foreigners who chose to make their home in this state. So much wealth created over a long time appears to be going down to the dungeons and no-one is willing to take the blame. Foreigners, who form the largest part of the Californian population, appear to have entrusted their investment to a financially mismanaged system.

Main body

California’s economic woes appear to have resulted from a political system that has failed in its obligations to provide good governance to its citizens. This mighty and entrepreneurial and technological giant that should be standing high as one of the world’s largest economies is probably being destroyed by the same people who have worked so hard to put it up together. Californian politics seem to have missed out on the right road to the economic well-being of the state.

Had the voters agreed to a reduction in spending and embraced tax increases, California would probably be rising from her domestic problems. But the voters are being pulled into solving problems that they probably did not create and such a move offers no solution to underlying causes of the current problems. Yet, the voters should probably have agreed to the bail out plan inorder to avert worse and more embarrassing situations in future.

The writer aims to bring to attention the current domestic problems affecting the U.S economy and which he suggests should be receiving more attention from the Obama administration than any other global issue. California’s problems are however not unique to the state alone but as a matter of fact is a nationwide phenomenon and paying a little more attention to California would probably help to avert a bad situation in so many states.

However, the future and well-being of a big nation like the U.S cannot be laid down in the constitution of one single state no matter how large. What would be relevant for California may not be applicable elsewhere and the fiscal restructuring of any state should not be woes of another. Besides, the U.S is a very large economy and her financial ailing cannot be treated by the symptoms of one state.

No doubt California is facing a crisis characterized by declining public institutions and deteriorating roads but her public universities remain very prestigious. Large investors do not appear to be interested in investing in California anymore and agriculture depends on temporal Mexican workers who send their earnings back home. But these workers do not send back everything because purchasing basic goods improves the economy.

Conclusion

Californian problems as well as those of the wider U.S society cannot so much be blamed on so many factors but rather on the general political environment. Democrats Vs Republicans as well as those who harbor special interests remain aloof about her problems. To sort the state of California out of the current crisis, the federal government must have the greater role to play in restructuring. The President may insist that taxpayers dig deeper into their pockets and if they refuse, his idea of expanded government would face great opposition.
