Introduction
The field of Early Childhood Development is constantly evolving, requiring educators to stay up to date on the most recent trends. It is important for educators to understand why the U.S. chose to transition to CCS and how they differ from the NCLB and ESSA initiatives. This paper examines how CCS, adopted by the majority of U.S. states, is affecting early childhood development and evaluates its pros and cons in Maryland.
The Common Core Standards in the United States
The United States has implemented College and Career Standards in order to ensure that students across the country receive a uniform and rigorous education. CCS differ from No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in that they focus more on college and career readiness, rather than standardized testing (Wyatt & Beaver, 2022). The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is different in that it requires states to establish a comprehensive school improvement system that includes evidence-based interventions and systems of support to ensure student success.
CCS will be assessed using a variety of measures, including standardized tests, classroom assessments, and projects. The pros of CCS include increased rigor and relevance to real-world learning, and the cons include the potential for increased reliance on standardized testing and the lack of resources available to support implementation (Wyatt & Beaver, 2022). CCS has the potential to boost student engagement and learning, but educators and administrators should weigh its drawbacks and ensure correct implementation to maximize its benefits.
The Common Core Standards in Maryland
In Maryland, CCS is being implemented for children from birth through eight through the Maryland State Early Learning Standards. These standards are designed to provide a foundation for learning and development in the early years and to ensure that all children have access to a high-quality education (O’Meally et al., 2020). Additionally, Maryland is committed to expanding access to high-quality, evidence-based early learning programs and providing support for all early childhood educators.
