Geography
Lansing is a centerpiece of an area of Michigan popularly referred to as “mid-Michigan”. It is situated in south-central parts of the lower peninsula of Michigan, where the Grand River converges Red Cedar River. The city has a total area of 36.68 square miles, of which 36.05 is covered by land and 0.63 by water (MacLean & Whitford, 2003). The city occupies a significant part of what had formally been the greater part of Lansing Charter Township. The city of Lansing also controls three non-contagious tracts of land through 425 agreements. Its elevation ranges between 890 feet above sea level on the city’s south side. The Grand River is the largest in Michigan and flows through downtown Lansing.
History
The city was originally known as Michigan. It was renamed Lansing by the Michigan parliament in 1847. It was renamed after the New York statesman John Lansing Jr. It was incorporated as a city in 1859. Since then the city has been recording significant history because many events have occurred in between.
I have lived in Lansing city for some time and the place has great memories. The cost of living is relatively cheap and many people can afford basic needs. There is a lot of fun in the city since there are many places people can visit and enjoy outdoor activities at a reasonable cost. The great historical sites and museums provide beautiful and attractive sceneries for people to learn and have pleasure. The city is near three significant lakes which are a great resource of the city and people can visit and interact with nature. The city also has the best seasons with low risk hence providing a significant environment for vacationing and living.
Social Determinants of Health
Dwellers of Lansing city have access to medical services since the city has adequate health facilities to offer quality treatment. The city also has the best schools offering (PK-16) education and other levels of education. Children have great access to educational facilities and have the best tutors to felicitate learning. However, the issue of food security has been of great concern in the city. Since large parts of the country are dry, many cities including Lansing are facing food insecurity. A significant number of residents struggle to provide for their families.
Lansing city is a united society and residents greatly care for one another. They are always willing to help one another when needed. When it comes to infrastructure, state government buildings dominate the city’s downtown. The city is run by a mayor-council government and its governance has been a key aspect of its development. The state of transportation is encouraging because roads and railways are in fair condition. This makes transportation smooth and efficient.
The city’s economy is slowly picking up after COVID-19 disruptions which had a bad impact on businesses. Due to the beautiful scenery in the city, many investors are investing in the city in various fields hence contributing significantly to the city’s economy. There are significant opportunities in Lansing city and various stakeholders are exploring them effectively.
Conclusion
Lansing City is home to many public and private assets, however, no important minerals have been discovered there. State buildings and significant headquarters of big insurance companies are located in the city. Some of the issues that need to be addressed are the issues of clean water and air pollution. Many residents cannot access clean water with ease because many parts of the city don’t have adequate water points. Air pollution is another big issue of concern since many residents are complaining about the state of their environment.
